Martha Stewart learned an important lesson about proper footwear while sitting courtside at a basketball game.
The beloved housewife and TV star, 84, revealed during an appearance in December 2025 “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that an NBA player accidentally broke his toe during a playoff game.
The player and the game in question? New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson during Game 1 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinals at Madison Square Garden on May 21.
That night, the Knicks lost to the Indiana Pacers. And Stewart stepped on her toe in Brunson’s size 13.
“Never, ever wear open-toed shoes to a game like this when you’re sitting on the floor,” Stewart told Fallon about the incident. “I have a Brunson’s fracture. He stepped on my toe.”
She continued: “I knew right away it was broken. He came down and sat on my lap and I grabbed his arm and his hand was like ice cold. And I thought, ‘He’s a basketball player, he should be sweaty.’ He wasn’t sweaty at all. He was cool as a cucumber.”
Thankfully, Stewart had no hard feelings about the injury, telling Fallon that Brunson is “super-duper” and “he’s so cool.”
The former talk show host also said she joked about her latest sacrifice with Brunson’s father Rick — who is an assistant coach for the Knicks — and his mom Sandra after the game. “I met his parents and they were laughing. They thought it was so funny.”
Stewart revealed that she got her grandson a signed basketball for her trouble. However, she admitted that her choice of shoes is now limited.
