Syracuse, NY – Parts of Central New York can expect up to 17 inches of snow on New Year’s Eve as the region digs out from a lake-effect storm that hit the region, according to the National Weather Service.
A lake-effect storm has already set a record; Syracuse received 19.3 inches of snow on Tuesday, the city’s snowiest day in 32 years and the eighth snowiest day since the weather service began tracking snowfall totals in 1902.
While the blinding lake-effect snowstorm will die down by Wednesday afternoon, another system threatens to bring more widespread snow and potentially dangerous storms on New Year’s Eve.
The storm is forecast to dump three inches of snow on Syracuse on New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, in Oswego County, up to 10 inches of snow could fall during the day on New Year’s Eve before another seven inches falls that night, according to the weather service.
Up to four inches of snow is expected to fall in Cayuga County on Thursday. Up to three inches of snow is expected to fall in Madison County on Thursday.
The snowfall should finally slow down on New Year’s Day.
About an inch of snow is expected in Syracuse, as well as in Madison and Cayuga counties, according to the weather service. Oswego County should get one to three inches.
