Le Moyne basketball scares Boston College, but falls short

Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts – Donald Hand Jr. scored 26 points to lead Boston College to a 72-64 victory over the Le Moyne men’s basketball team Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.

Graduate student forward Shilo Jackson led the Dolphins in the upset with his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore guard Deng Garang (Bishop Grimes) had 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-best three blocks. Redshirt junior guard Trent Mosquera turned in 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks and junior guard Tennessee Rainwater had 12 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Hand Jr. scored a game-high 18 points in the second half and added seven rebounds and two steals. Fred Payne had a career-high 22 points, including 15 in the first half, to go along with seven rebounds. Boden Kapke led the Eagles with 11 rebounds.

The Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the opening 4:05. Hand Jr. had the first five points. and Payne followed them with four more.

After back-to-back 3-pointers by Payne around a Garang 3-pointer to give Boston College a 15-9 lead, Le Moyne scored nine straight points to take its first lead of the game. Jackson had two baskets in the paint, Rainwater drilled a 3-pointer for the lead and then Jackson scored again in the paint.

Boston College regained the lead with six more points, the first five of which came from Payne, to cap his 15-point streak for Boston College.

Le Moyne answered with six of the next eight points, the last four by Jackson, to regain the lead 24-23 with 5:37 left in the half.

After a free throw by Jackson with 3:47 left to tie the score at 25, the Eagles scored five of the next seven points. Hand Jr. made a 3-pointer and then Jason Asemota countered Garanga’s layup with two fouls.

Garang had a fast break layup with 38 seconds left to make the halftime score 30-29 in favor of the Eagles.

After trading points to open the second half that resulted in a 34-all tie with 17:45 remaining, Boston College scored seven straight points for its largest lead of the game going into the final minute.

Jayden Hastings and Hand Jr. they made layups and then Payne drilled a 3-pointer. Le Moyne responded with a 16-5 run to take its biggest lead of the game. Mosquera made his first 3-pointer of the game, Garang made a free throw and then Rainwater drained a 3-pointer to tie the score at 43.

After the Eagles regained the lead with a 3-pointer, Rainwater made a layup, Jackson scored in the paint, Garang made two free throws for the lead and then Mosquera buried another 3-pointer for a 52-48 advantage with 9:11 left.

After Mosquera made it 54-50 with 8:36 left, the Eagles scored 10 of the next 11 points to take the lead for good.

Hand Jr. made two free throws and a 3-pointer past Rainwater to tie the score at 55; Kapke got the lead and then Payne drilled a 3-pointer in transition to force a Le Moyne timeout.

Rainwater buried another 3-pointer out of a timeout to bring the Dolphins within two, but Boston College countered with six more points to take its first eight-point lead.

Hand Jr. made a jumper, Hastings had a layup and then Chase Forte converted a quick layup off a steal to force another Le Moyne timeout with 2:33 remaining.

After a minute and a half of scoreless play, Payne pushed BC’s lead to nine in the game with a free throw with 1:05 left.

Sophomore guard Jakai Sanders topped Le Moyne’s score at 4:16 with a conventional three-point play with 51 seconds left.

After two missed free throws by Payne Mosquera, he drew a 3-point shooting foul and knocked down all three free throws to get the Dolphins within 67-64 with 32 seconds left.

The Eagles went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 31 seconds surrounding three Le Moyne missed field goal attempts to close out the game’s scoring.

Le Moyne (5-8) opens NEC action Friday at Saint Francis University at 7 p.m
