Flight delays through September were higher than a year ago at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, according to federal data.
Through September, the most recent month with available data, 17.9% of flights departing Syracuse were delayed, according to federal data. Office for Transport Statistics. That’s up from 16.8% over the same period in 2024.
The office considers a flight delayed if it has left its gate 15 minutes or more after the scheduled time.
More than 7,700 flights left Syracuse until September, according to the authority. Of these, over 6,200 were on time, 1,392 were delayed and 176 were cancelled.
The cancellation rate also increased from last year: 2.26% in 2025 versus 1.82% in 2024.
The Syracuse airport has seen an increase in traffic in recent years, in part because airlines have stopped using smaller planes at smaller regional airports like Binghamton or Ithaca. This brought more passengers to Syracuse.
The airport also expects an increase in traffic related to Micron Technology’s plans to build four massive computer memory chip factories in Clay. Officials plan to expand.
Overall, 16.47% of flights from Syracuse were delayed and 1.51% canceled in 2024. This was down from 16.94% and 1.93% in 2023.
