2 New York lottery players win big as Arkansas hits massive jackpot: Two New York stores sold $1 million worth of tickets in Wednesday’s historic $1.817 billion Powerball drawing, with the jackpot going to the only ticket sold in Arkansas. The winning NY tickets were purchased at stores in Sidney and Lindenhurst, matching all five white balls but missing the Powerball. The Arkansas winner, now the second-biggest lottery winner in US history, can choose between an annual prize of $1.817 billion or a one-time payment of $834.9 million before taxes.

Water crisis looms as county prepares emergency distribution plan: Onondaga County is preparing to distribute thousands of gallons of bottled water to residents if the local water system runs dry, which could happen as early as this weekend in parts of Manlius, Pompey and Fayetteville. County Executive Ryan McMahon said distribution will begin if data shows a “likely stoppage” of service. The emergency stems from a broken transmission line that normally serves 27,000 customer accounts in six cities. Officials issued mandatory conservation notices and urged residents to take shorter showers, limit toilet flushing and limit non-essential water use. More about the situation:
- The city of Syracuse pumps an additional 800,000 gallons of water into DeWitt daily. The city also opened the border gates and is helping supply the Byrne Dairy plant in East Syracuse with about 100,000 gallons a day.
- Repairing a burst water line can take longer than originally anticipated. While water levels have stabilized thanks to community protection and additional supplies, repair equipment will not arrive until Friday.
- Syracuse Haulers is keeping its fleet “as dirty as operationally possible” during mandatory water restrictions. Other local businesses are adapting creatively.
Mystery couple leaves $1,000 worth of tips at two Syracuse eateries: Two Syracuse-area waitresses got a stunning holiday surprise when the same mystery couple left each of them a $1,000 tip within 24 hours. At Dee’s Diner in Mattydale, 20-year-old server Joyce Chapman found an envelope containing ten $100 bills after the couple paid their $28.62 breakfast bill. Chapman, overwhelmed by the generosity, immediately tried to “pay it forward” by offering to buy breakfast for nearby customers. Less than a day later, the same couple visited Mother’s Cupboard on James Street, where waitress Patricia Yager received the same gift after serving their meager breakfast. “I don’t know what to say. I honestly don’t know,” said Yager, who plans to use the money for gifts during her upcoming family visit to Tennessee. Read more and watch the video

Orange expects offensive support as Freeman nears comeback: Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman is expected to return for the Orange’s ACC opener against Clemson on Dec. 31, providing a much-needed boost to a team that has gone 5-4 in his absence. The sophomore, who averaged 17.8 points and 5.3 rebounds before the injury, should help a Syracuse offense that has dropped from 81.5 to 71.5 points per game without him. Coach Adrian Autry emphasized Freeman’s importance to spacing the floor and defensive versatility, noting that “it just opens up a lot of things for other guys.”
