DeWitt waste hauler embraces its “necessary side” amid push to conserve water

DeWitt, NY – A DeWitt waste hauler is embracing its “waste side” amid a push to conserve water to keep the local water system from drying up.

Syracuse Haulers is keeping its truck fleet “as dirty as operationally possible” until water restrictions are lifted, the company said in to posts on social networks Tuesday.

“Our home is right here in East Syracuse, and like our neighbors, we are making changes to help conserve water during this disruption,” the company said.

A water main break operated by the Onondaga County Water Authority has caused water shortages in six towns in eastern Onondaga County and western Madison County. Officials have issued a mandatory conservation notice telling residents and businesses to limit non-essential water use.

Water use appears to be decreasing, officials said. But more cuts are needed or some areas could be without water as early as this weekend.

Other businesses are also limiting their water consumption.

Lotte Biologics, a pharmaceutical company in East Syracuse, said it changed its process to use less water.

And a medical facility in DeWitt, which officials declined to name, rented portable toilets for staff so patients could continue to use indoor restrooms.

Repairing the burst water main is a complicated process that could take until early January, officials said.
